Kendetegn

Males display distinctive black and white head markings with a bold black breast band, while females are more subdued with buff and grey tones and lack the prominent breast pattern. Both sexes have compact, rounded bodies typical of quail, with rufous flanks and scaled underparts.

Adults weigh 60–90 grams and measure 16–19 cm in body length; males average slightly larger than females.

Levested

Banded quail inhabits arid and semi-arid scrublands, brushy foothills, and desert valleys with scattered low vegetation. They prefer areas with bare ground patches interspersed with dense shrub cover, typically at elevations between 600–2000 metres.

Udbredelse

Native to northwestern Mexico (Sonora and Sinaloa), with the species' range extending into extreme southwestern Arizona. They occupy the transition zone between Sonoran Desert and Mexican thornscrub habitats.

Føde

Banded quail feed primarily on small seeds from desert plants and grasses, supplemented with insects (especially during breeding season) and green vegetation when available.

Adfærd

They are primarily diurnal foragers, moving quietly through dense brush in small coveys of 4–12 birds. They are reluctant fliers and prefer running to escape predators, often freezing motionless when threatened.

Jagttips

Look for covey sign (track clusters, droppings, and dust baths) along dry washes and beneath dense shrub stands. Approach slowly through brushy terrain during early morning or late afternoon when birds are actively foraging. Work uphill toward cover and flush birds toward open ground; pursue individual birds on foot as they tire quickly from running.
