Appearance

Small duck with distinctive yellow bill and grey-brown plumage. Males darker on the head than females; no dramatic sexual dimorphism.

Size and weight

Male 450–550 g and 38–41 cm; female 380–480 g and 37–40 cm.

Habitat

Inhabits shallow wetlands, small lakes, and stream margins in temperate zones. Prefers open water with surrounding dense vegetation.

Distribution

South American species ranging from Colombia to Tierra del Fuego. Found in wetlands and marshes at altitude.

Diet

Forages on seeds, plant material, and small invertebrates including insects and crustaceans.

Behaviour

Most active at dawn and dusk. Often grazes on land; highly social outside breeding season.

Hunting tips

Look for small flocks at calm water edges during twilight hours. Tracks show fine webbed footprints in mud along banks. Approach slowly from vegetation, as the species is easily flushed.
