Appearance

Small, delicate dove with warm buff-grey plumage, scaled breast pattern, and distinctive iridescent wing spots visible in flight. Males show rusty-red facial skin patch and deeper chest coloration; females are duller overall with less prominent facial marking.

Size and weight

Adults: 15–17 cm body length; 23–26 g (males typically 25–26 g, females 23–24 g).

Habitat

Common ground doves inhabit open and semi-open areas including brushy fields, desert scrub, agricultural land, and woodland edges from sea level to moderate elevations. They prefer sparse ground cover with access to bare soil and sandy patches for foraging and dust bathing.

Distribution

Range extends from the southwestern United States through Mexico and Central America to northern South America. Within their range, they favour arid and semi-arid lowlands with scattered brush and cultivated fields.

Diet

Ground doves consume small seeds from grasses, weeds, and cultivated grains; they also peck fallen seed beneath shrubs and feed opportunistically on small invertebrates.

Behaviour

Diurnal and crepuscular foragers, often moving on foot through short grass before flushing into low flight. They are social, forming loose flocks outside breeding season, and regularly visit water sources to drink and bathe in dust.

Hunting tips

Look for tracks and droppings in dust and sand patches where birds congregate; fresh sign near water sources is reliable. Approach slowly through open terrain at dawn or dusk when birds are most active; use natural cover and avoid silhouetting. Ground doves flush in short, low bursts and often perch visibly on low branches after flushing, allowing a second approach if initial flush is unsuccessful.
