Appearance

This skunk is robust and compact with a distinctive long, mobile snout used for rooting. The coat is black with a prominent white dorsal stripe running from the head to the base of the tail; males are notably larger and stockier than females.

Size and weight

Males weigh 1.8–2.5 kg and measure 41–51 cm in body length; females typically weigh 1.3–1.8 kg and measure 36–46 cm.

Habitat

American hog-nosed skunks occupy semi-arid and arid regions from low desert scrub to grassland and open woodland, typically at elevations between 600–2,400 m. They favor areas with loose, friable soil suitable for digging.

Distribution

Range extends from southwestern United States (Arizona, New Mexico, south-central Texas) south through Mexico to Central America. They prefer arid grasslands and desert scrub with access to soft ground.

Diet

Primarily insectivorous, feeding on beetle larvae, grasshoppers, ants, and other soil invertebrates; also opportunistically consumes lizards, small vertebrates, and plant material seasonally.

Behaviour

Nocturnal and crepuscular foragers that spend extended periods rooting in soil; solitary except during breeding season, with males showing larger home ranges than females. Movement is deliberate and low to ground.

Hunting tips

Look for characteristic conical and linear excavation marks in soft soil where the animal has rooted for invertebrates; scat is scattered and contains insect fragments. Approach quietly during twilight hours along likely feeding areas with exposed soil or sparse vegetation. Move slowly and pause frequently, as animals are often absorbed in foraging and have poor vision but acute hearing and smell.
