Appearance

Black and white plumage with a striking long, bright orange-red bill; black upperparts, white underparts, and white wing-bars in flight. Males and females are similar in plumage; females average slightly larger overall.

Size and weight

Adults typically weigh 400–700 g, with body length 40–46 cm; females average 430–700 g, males 400–550 g.

Habitat

Eurasian oystercatchers favour open coastal zones, estuaries, and shingle beaches, but also occupy inland gravel beds, grasslands, and riverside habitats from sea level to moderate elevations. They prefer unvegetated or sparsely vegetated substrates with ready access to shallow water or mudflats.

Distribution

Breeds across temperate Europe and into western Asia; resident populations occur along Atlantic and North Sea coasts, while inland and northern populations migrate southwestward in winter. Highest densities found on productive estuaries and coastal flats.

Diet

Primarily molluscs (mussels, cockles, and oysters) extracted from intertidal zones; also eats worms, crustaceans, and small fish, with diet shifting seasonally to favour accessible prey during harsh weather.

Behaviour

Diurnal and crepuscular feeder; highly vocal and demonstrative when breeding; social outside breeding season, often forming flocks on beaches and estuaries; direct, powerful flight with distinctive piping calls.

Hunting tips

Look for characteristic loud piping calls and white-and-black silhouettes in flight or on open ground; droppings are white-streaked and found along tide-lines and nesting areas. Approach open habitats by moving during tidal feeding windows when birds are concentrated; use available cover (banks, dunes, or tide-line debris) and move during active feeding to minimize detection. Expect fast, evasive flight and approach nearest on still, overcast mornings when birds are least wary.
