Appearance

Robust, powerfully built antelope with a distinctive reddish-brown coat, lighter on the belly and face, and a dark mane along the neck and back. Both sexes carry long, backward-curved horns; males are notably larger and darker, with more impressive horns than females.

Size and weight

Males 210–240 cm body length, 250–300 kg; females 200–210 cm, 200–260 kg.

Habitat

Roan antelope inhabit open and semi-open grasslands, woodland savanna, and floodplain grasslands from sea level to 2,000 m elevation. They favour areas with tall grass and scattered trees that provide both grazing and refuge.

Distribution

Found across sub-Saharan Africa from Senegal to South Africa, primarily in savanna and grassland belts. Populations are fragmented and prefer higher-rainfall zones within their range.

Diet

Primarily a grazer, feeding on medium to tall grasses; in dry season may browse shrubs and herbs when grass quality declines.

Behaviour

Crepuscular, most active in early morning and late afternoon; social structure varies from bachelor groups to small herds of females and young, often led by a dominant stallion. They are relatively sedentary but will move to water and fresh grazing.

Hunting tips

Look for deep, wide hoof prints and rounded droppings in tall grass near grazing areas and water sources. Approach into wind during early morning or late afternoon when they are most active; use available cover (scattered trees, termite mounds) to close distance. Stalk slowly and pause frequently to scan; these alert animals will detect careless movement and depart at a gallop.
