Appearance

Robust antelope with dark greyish-brown coat, distinctive white ring on rump, and thick upright mane. Males are substantially larger and carry long, lyre-shaped horns.

Size and weight

Males weigh 200–250 kg, females 150–180 kg; body length 240–260 cm.

Habitat

Waterbuck inhabits open grasslands and savanna with close proximity to permanent water sources such as rivers and lakes, typically in low to mid-altitude zones.

Distribution

Widespread across East and Central Africa from South Sudan to South Africa, invariably associated with permanent water sources.

Diet

Primary grazer feeding on tall grass near water, with seasonal variation in grass availability and species selection.

Behaviour

Most active at dawn and dusk, occupies small herds or family groups centered on water sources; territorial bulls return regularly to established home ranges.

Hunting tips

Locate sign at waterside grazing areas during early and late daylight—track grouped hoof prints and fresh dung piles indicating recent passage. Identify water holes as congregation points at first light. Stalk slowly into wind across open terrain, using vegetation and topography for cover while approaching.
