Scientific name: Patagioenas cayennensis

Field notes
Appearance
Medium-sized pigeon with deep wine-red breast and neck, grey-blue head, and characteristically pale (whitish) vent and undertail coverts. Sexes are similar in plumage, though males are typically slightly larger and more boldly coloured.
Size and weight
Adults typically weigh 150–280 g, with body length of 24–28 cm. Males average slightly heavier than females.
Habitat
Pale-vented pigeons inhabit humid lowland and foothill forests, woodland edges, and cultivated areas from sea level to approximately 1,500 m elevation. They favour semi-open canopy and forest margins with scattered fruiting trees.
Distribution
Ranges throughout the Amazon Basin and adjacent lowlands from Venezuela and the Guianas south to Peru and Bolivia. Most abundant in humid forest zones and agricultural transition areas.
Diet
Feeds primarily on fallen fruit from forest trees (figs, melastomes, laurels) and seeds; also takes cultivated crops and berries, with fruiting season availability driving local movements.
Behaviour
Diurnal and crepuscular, often seen singly or in pairs; more vocal at dawn and dusk. Roosts in tall trees and moves between feeding and roosting areas with regular flight patterns, typically in loose flocks during non-breeding months.
Hunting tips
Look for droppings and perch marks beneath favoured fruiting trees, particularly figs and palm nuts. Approach feeding birds cautiously along forest margins at dawn or dusk when activity peaks; use natural cover and move slowly to avoid flushing flocks. Birds are relatively approachable in fruiting trees but flush quickly when alarmed, so position yourself downwind with clear sightlines before birds arrive.
Whole weight
This species is logged by whole weight — the animal weighed entire, as taken.
