Appearance

Medium-sized pigeon with iridescent purple-bronze neck and breast; slate-grey wings and back. Males show more vibrant iridescence than females. Reddish orbital ring and pale eyes are distinctive.

Size and weight

280–350 g; body length 24–28 cm. Minimal sexual dimorphism in size.

Habitat

Inhabits open woodlands, scrublands, and cultivated areas from lowland savannas to montane forests up to 2,500 m elevation. Prefers semi-open terrain with scattered trees and access to water.

Distribution

Found across central and eastern South America from southern Brazil through Paraguay to northern Argentina. Favors open savannas and agricultural margins.

Diet

Primarily seeds from grasses and forbs; also takes fallen grain, fruits, and berries. Seasonal preference shifts toward grain crops during harvest.

Behaviour

Diurnal and crepuscular feeder, most active at dawn and dusk. Gregarious, often seen in small to medium flocks. Strong, direct flight; roosts communally in tall trees.

Hunting tips

Scout feeding grounds at first light and dusk when birds move between roosts and fields. Look for droppings and feather dust near perches and feeding sites. Approach using terrain cover; birds are alert and flush easily. Lead shots on crossing birds; decoys can draw flocks to favorable positions.
