Appearance
Dark overall plumage with rufous-chestnut underparts and legs; bare facial skin around eye is bluish-grey. Males slightly larger and darker than females; long tail and sturdy build characteristic of guans.
Size and weight
Males 53–63 cm, 350–550 g; females 50–58 cm, 320–480 g.
Habitat
Inhabits humid montane forests and forest edges from 600 to 2,600 m elevation. Prefers dense undergrowth and mixed woodland with adequate fruiting trees.
Distribution
Endemic to montane forests of south-central Chile and adjacent Argentina (Andes from ~35°S to 42°S). Locally common but patchily distributed.
Diet
Primarily frugivorous, favoring berries and drupes from mistletoes, melastomes, and laurels; supplements with leaves, shoots, and insects, especially during fruiting shortages.
Behaviour
Primarily arboreal and diurnal; solitary or in pairs; moves quietly through canopy at dawn and dusk. Roosts in high branches; often heard calling from perches before foraging.
Hunting tips
Look for droppings and feather scatter beneath fruiting trees, particularly at dawn. Move slowly upslope through dense cover; birds often perch motionless when alarmed, allowing careful stalk. Listen for soft clucking and use natural cover to close distance; approach from below when possible.
