Appearance

Males are larger with a prominent erectile crest on the crown, dark glossy plumage (dark olive-green to purplish-black), bare red facial skin, and a long tail. Females are smaller and duller overall, with less prominent crest and fainter facial coloring.

Size and weight

Males 58–64 cm, 380–550 kg; females 48–56 cm, 280–380 g.

Habitat

Crested guans inhabit humid montane and submontane forests from 600–2,400 m elevation, preferring dense canopy with emergent fruiting trees and thick understory. They require continuous primary or mature secondary forest with reliable water sources.

Distribution

Found from southern Mexico (Chiapas) through Central America to northwestern South America (Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, and Peru). Restricted to humid forests on the Pacific and Caribbean slopes of mountain ranges.

Diet

Primarily frugivorous, feeding heavily on fruits from Lauraceae, Melastomataceae, and Araliaceae; also takes leaves, buds, and invertebrates, with fruit availability driving seasonal movement.

Behaviour

Diurnal, arboreal, and wary; typically solitary or in pairs, moving deliberately through canopy and lower branches in early morning and late afternoon. They perch conspicuously on high branches and are strong fliers despite their terrestrial habits.

Hunting tips

Search for their characteristic loud, resonant vocalizations and track movement via fresh droppings and scratched leaf litter beneath fruiting trees. Approach slowly upslope through dense cover at dawn or dusk, watching high perches; use calling to locate birds, then move quietly into range. Glassing ridges and canopy edges from distance will reveal roosting birds before stalking begins.
