Appearance

Medium-sized plover with golden-spangled upper plumage and distinctive white eyebrow stripe. Breeding males show black face and breast; females and non-breeding birds are duller brown-gold above with less black marking. Compact, round-bodied silhouette in flight.

Size and weight

Adults weigh 150–210 g; body length 26–29 cm. Males average slightly heavier than females.

Habitat

Breeds on open moorland, tundra, and upland plateaus with sparse vegetation, typically above 300 m elevation. Winters on coastal marshes, grasslands, and agricultural fields at lower altitudes.

Distribution

Breeds across northern Europe from Iceland through Scandinavia to Russia. Winters across western and southern Europe, North Africa, and the Mediterranean basin; uses intermediate staging areas during migration.

Diet

Primarily invertebrates including beetles, flies, spiders, and earthworms; also takes small seeds and plant material, especially in winter.

Behaviour

Highly gregarious, forming flocks of dozens to hundreds outside breeding season. Active primarily at dawn and dusk but also diurnal; feed by running and pausing to peck. Migratory, with rapid erratic flight when flushed.

Hunting tips

Look for flattened vegetation, droppings (white with dark centres), and shallow scrapes in turf where birds rest. Approach from downwind across open ground slowly; birds are wary and flush readily when approached directly. Use terrain folds and gentle stalking to within effective range; listen for their distinctive piping calls to locate concentrations.
