Appearance

Small partridge with speckled grey-brown plumage overall. Males feature a distinctive red bill, red eye-ring, and red legs; females are duller with reduced red colouring. Both sexes show fine barring on the underparts.

Size and weight

Adult weight 200–280 g; body length 24–28 cm. Males marginally larger than females.

Habitat

Rocky hillsides and scrubland with sparse to moderate bush cover, typically 600–2000 m elevation. Prefers areas with exposed rock outcrops and patches of bare ground for foraging.

Distribution

Endemic to southern Africa, ranging across South Africa, Botswana, Namibia, and Zimbabwe. Favours boulder-strewn savanna and rocky scrubland zones.

Diet

Seeds, small invertebrates, termites, and plant matter; composition shifts seasonally toward insects during rains and seeds in dry months.

Behaviour

Primarily diurnal, most active early morning and late afternoon. Occurs in pairs or small coveys; highly territorial and vocal year-round. Quick runners that prefer running to flushing; roost on rocky outcrops or in low bush.

Hunting tips

Look for tracks and droppings near rocky outcrops and dust-bathing sites at dawn. Approach into wind through broken terrain, using rocks and scrub for cover. Birds often run and hide rather than flush; patience and careful stalking of calling pairs yields best results.
