Appearance

Medium-sized gamebird with rufous-brown plumage overall; males display a prominent red face patch and possess sharp spurs on the legs, while females are duller with reduced facial markings. Distinctive white spotting on the wings and flanks.

Size and weight

Adults weigh 0.8–1.2 kg; body length approximately 28–35 cm. Males typically larger and heavier than females.

Habitat

Found in grasslands, scrubland, and open woodland areas at elevations from sea level to 2,100 m. Prefers areas with mixed grass cover and scattered shrubs providing shelter and feeding opportunities.

Distribution

Endemic to southeastern Africa, with range extending from southern Mozambique through Zimbabwe, eastern South Africa, and into Lesotho. Occupies montane grasslands and open woodland primarily.

Diet

Primarily seeds from grasses and herbs, supplemented with insects, green plant material, and fallen berries; insect intake increases during breeding season.

Behaviour

Diurnal ground-dweller spending most time foraging in small coveys of 4–8 birds; most active during early morning and late afternoon. Roosts in trees or tall grass at night; runs readily and flushes with loud, cackling calls when disturbed.

Hunting tips

Look for fresh scratch marks in soil and grass, together with clustered droppings under roosting trees. Approach from downwind through taller grass; birds hold tight in cover and flush explosively when close. Walk slowly through habitat during early morning or late afternoon when birds are actively foraging, using terrain contours to mask your approach.
