Appearance

Small, compact game bird with cryptic sandy-buff plumage speckled with darker markings. Males show a distinctive black-and-white face pattern and darker breast; females are duller overall. Length 24–26 cm.

Size and weight

Adult weight 180–220 g; males slightly heavier than females. Body length 24–26 cm.

Habitat

Open, arid scrubland and semi-desert plains with sparse grass, low shrubs, and sandy or stony ground. Typically found below 1,500 m altitude in dry savanna regions.

Distribution

Endemic to southern Africa, with range centred in Botswana, Namibia, and northern South Africa. Prefers arid lowland plains with scattered vegetation.

Diet

Primarily small seeds from grasses and herbs; also takes small insects and grit for digestion. Diet shifts to available vegetation seasonally.

Behaviour

Highly gregarious and crepuscular, most active at dawn and dusk. Birds often move between feeding grounds and water sources in loose flocks. Flight is swift and direct with rapid wingbeats.

Hunting tips

Look for tracks in sand and dust, and droppings concentrated near water sources they visit regularly at dawn/dusk. Approach from downwind across open ground using available scrub for cover. Birds flush explosively in tight flocks; position ahead of expected flight lines or near water points where they congregate.
