Appearance

Finnish forest reindeer are stocky with a thick, greyish-brown winter coat that bleaches to lighter tan in summer; both sexes carry antlers, though males are larger and more heavily antlered. Distinctive features include a compact build, dark legs, and a pale rump patch.

Size and weight

Males typically weigh 130–180 kg and measure 150–180 cm in body length; females weigh 100–130 kg and measure 140–165 cm. Forest-dwelling populations tend toward the smaller end of rangifer size ranges.

Habitat

Finnish forest reindeer inhabit boreal forest and taiga ecosystems, with preference for lichen-rich ground vegetation in mature spruce and pine forests. They occupy low to moderate elevations with mixed terrain including forest clearings, wetlands, and regenerating woodland.

Distribution

Finnish forest reindeer are endemic to eastern and central Finland, primarily inhabiting the boreal forest belt east of the central watershed. Their range is fragmented across managed reindeer herding districts in regions such as Kainuu, North Karelia, and eastern Lapland.

Diet

Reindeer are specialized lichen grazers, consuming ground lichens year-round; they supplement with grasses, sedges, and shrub foliage in summer and autumn, and pine needle tips and bark in winter when snow depth increases.

Behaviour

Finnish forest reindeer are primarily crepuscular and nocturnal, most active at dawn, dusk, and night; they form loose herds or small family groups that move seasonally between summer and winter ranges, with daily movements often following wind and predator pressure.

Hunting tips

Look for narrow, paired hoof prints (8–9 mm wide) and small dark pellets (8–12 mm) concentrated in lichen-rich forest zones and along ridgelines. Approach crosswind through dense cover, moving slowly during low-light hours when reindeer are active; listen for the characteristic clicking sound in their leg tendons when they move. Fresh rubs and bark-stripped saplings indicate recent presence; fresh tracks in soft ground or snow are reliable indicators of proximity.
