Appearance

Medium-sized pigeon with predominantly green plumage and yellow-green coloration on head and breast. Males show brighter yellow on head; females are duller overall. Length 25–28 cm.

Size and weight

Adults weigh 180–240 g; males average 210 g, females 200 g. Body length 25–28 cm.

Habitat

Inhabits woodland savanna, forest edges, and riverine thickets from sea level to 2,000 m elevation. Prefers areas with fruiting trees and dense canopy cover.

Distribution

Endemic to sub-Saharan Africa from Guinea east to Sudan and south to South Africa. Found in woodland and forest habitats across tropical and subtropical zones.

Diet

Feeds primarily on fruit, especially figs, wild grapes, and berries; occasionally takes seeds and insects.

Behaviour

Diurnal and crepuscular feeder, most active at dawn and dusk. Gregarious, moving in small flocks between feeding and roosting sites; calls distinctively with soft cooing.

Hunting tips

Look for fresh droppings beneath fruiting trees and listen for distinctive cooing calls at dawn near feeding sites. Approach feeding birds slowly through cover, as they are wary and flush readily. Best stalked during early morning or late afternoon when birds concentrate in fruiting trees.
