Tuntomerkit

Collared peccaries are compact, pig-like animals with dark greyish-brown coats and a distinctive pale or white collar marking around the shoulders and neck. Males and females are similar in appearance, though males may be slightly more robust; adults have a musky odour and prominent musk glands above the rump.

Koko ja paino

Adults weigh 15–30 kg (typically 18–25 kg), with body length of 75–100 cm; males average slightly heavier and longer than females.

Elinympäristö

Peccaries inhabit arid and semi-arid scrublands, mesquite thickets, chaparral, and desert washes with scattered vegetation. They favour areas with access to water and dense cover for bedding, typically at elevations from sea level to 1,500 m.

Levinneisyys

Found from the southwestern United States (Arizona, New Mexico, Texas) through Mexico, Central America, and into South America to Patagonia. North American populations favour desert scrub and chaparral; range expands southward into tropical deciduous forests.

Ravinto

Peccaries are omnivorous foragers eating roots, tubers, prickly pear cactus, agave, nuts, berries, insects, carrion, and small vertebrates; diet shifts seasonally with fruit and green plant availability.

Käyttäytyminen

Primarily crepuscular and nocturnal, becoming more active at dawn and dusk, especially in cooler months. They are highly social, moving in family groups (2–15 individuals) with predictable trails and distinct bedding areas; groups are vocal and use strong odour communication.

Metsästysvinkit

Look for distinct cloven-hoof tracks (2.5–4 cm), barrel-shaped droppings, and well-worn trails radiating from bedding areas in dense brush. Approach into wind through early morning or late afternoon; stalk slowly near water sources and known bedding thickets, listening for vocalizations and the distinctive musky scent that carries on air currents. Use a patient glassing approach in open country, then move deliberately through cover toward bedded groups.
