Størrelse og vekt

Adults typically weigh 60–75 g, with males slightly heavier (70–75 g) than females (60–70 g).

Leveområde

Singing quail inhabits dense, brushy grasslands and scrubland with scattered low vegetation, typically between 1,500–2,500 m altitude. They prefer areas with adequate ground cover and access to open patches for feeding.

Utbredelse

Endemic to highland regions of central Mexico, from Jalisco to Oaxaca, where they occupy temperate pine-oak and grassland ecosystems between 1,500–2,500 m.

Føde

This species feeds primarily on grass seeds, small insects, and vegetation, with seasonal preference shifting toward insects during breeding months.

Atferd

Singing quail are primarily diurnal and ground-dwelling, moving through dense cover with quick, furtive runs. They are solitary or found in pairs, roosting on or near the ground within protective vegetation.

Jakttips

Look for small tracks (2–3 cm stride) and droppings along cleared runs through dense grass; birds often freeze when approached, then flush explosively into nearby cover. Move slowly through brushy terrain during early morning or late afternoon, using the slope contours to mask your approach and advance into wind. Employ deliberate, pausing steps to flush birds within range; listen for alarm calls and rustling that may indicate nearby coveys.
