Kjennetegn

Small, compact dove with distinctive reddish-brown plumage overall and iridescent purple-bronze patches on wings and back. Males show deeper coloration than females; both have small rounded head and short tail characteristic of ground-dwelling doves.

Adults weigh 65–85 grams; body length approximately 20–23 cm. Sexual size dimorphism is minimal.

Leveområde

Ruddy quail-dove inhabits humid forest floors and dense undergrowth, preferring lowland and foothill forests with thick leaf litter and low vegetation. Found from sea level to approximately 1,500 meters elevation.

Utbredelse

Range spans southern Mexico through Central America to northwestern South America (Colombia, Venezuela). Strongly associated with humid lowland and montane forest habitats, avoiding open areas.

Føde

Feeds primarily on fallen seeds from forest floor vegetation and small fallen fruits; also takes insects and small invertebrates when available.

Atferd

Most active during dawn and dusk (crepuscular). Solitary or in pairs; walks quietly on forest floor with head low. Flushes suddenly when disturbed, flying low and fast through dense cover before dropping back to ground.

Jakttips

Look for fine, shallow scratches in leaf litter and small round droppings indicating feeding sites. Approach slowly along dense forest edges during early morning and late afternoon; bird relies on camouflage rather than flight. Flush birds from cover by moving deliberately through undergrowth, and expect rapid low-altitude escape flights.
