Leveområde

Ocellated turkey inhabits humid lowland forests, semi-open woodlands, and scrubland in tropical regions. They prefer areas with dense understory vegetation and clearings at elevations up to 1,500 meters.

Utbredelse

Endemic to the Yucatan Peninsula region of Mexico, Belize, and Guatemala, occupying humid lowland and mid-elevation tropical forests where they prefer areas adjacent to forest openings.

Føde

They forage on forest floor for seeds, fallen fruits, insects, and small arthropods, with seasonal preference shifting toward fruiting plants during wet season.

Atferd

Ocellated turkeys are primarily diurnal and ground-dwelling, moving in small flocks or pairs through understory; they roost in trees at night and travel regularly between feeding and watering areas.

Jakttips

Look for tracks (large, three-toed prints), scratched leaf litter, and droppings clustered in feeding zones near water sources. Approach slowly through dense vegetation toward forest edges at dawn or late afternoon; use natural cover and move perpendicular to suspected travel routes. Stalk carefully—these birds have keen hearing and will flush quickly into dense brush or canopy.
