Appearance

Males are striking with a bold white-and-black facial pattern, chestnut crown, and gray-brown back with heavy spotting; females are duller overall with buff underparts and subtle facial markings. Both sexes are compact, rounded quail with short tails and relatively large feet adapted for scratching.

Size and weight

Males 20–23 cm, 170–210 g; females 19–22 cm, 155–185 g.

Habitat

Montezuma quail inhabit semi-arid mountain grasslands and oak-juniper scrublands, typically between 1,500–2,500 m elevation. They prefer gentle slopes with bunch grass, scattered shrubs, and rocky outcrops that provide both foraging substrate and quick escape cover.

Distribution

Found in Mexico from Jalisco to Oaxaca, with range extending north into the mountains of southeastern Arizona and southwestern New Mexico. They occupy high-elevation grasslands with specific soil and vegetation conditions that are patchily distributed across their range.

Diet

They feed primarily on grass seeds, small bulbs, and insects (especially ants and beetles), scratching vigorously at soil surface year-round; insect intake increases during breeding season.

Behaviour

Montezuma quail are ground-dwelling, preferring to walk and hide rather than flush; they are most active in early morning and late afternoon. They typically occur in small coveys of 4–8 birds that scatter widely when disturbed and reunite by calling.

Hunting tips

Look for shallow, dusty scrape marks and fine droppings near bunch grass and rocky areas—signs of active scratching sites. Approach slowly during morning or late-afternoon hours across open grassland; birds often hold tight, then flush explosively at close range. Work upslope through oak-grass transition zones, pausing frequently to listen for soft contact calls that betray covey location.
