Kenmerken

Gulo gulo has a stocky, muscular build with dark brown to black fur, distinctive pale stripes running from shoulders to rump, and a bushy tail. Males are noticeably larger and more robust than females; the animal's powerful build and low profile are immediately recognizable.

Males typically weigh 11–18 kg and measure 65–105 cm body length; females weigh 8–12 kg and measure 60–90 cm. Total body length including tail reaches up to 130 cm.

Leefgebied

Wolverines inhabit boreal forests, tundra, and alpine meadows in subarctic and arctic regions. They prefer remote, sparsely vegetated terrain with rocky outcrops and require extensive home ranges across varied topography.

Found across northern Scandinavia, Russia, Canada, and Alaska in boreal and arctic zones. Populations are sparse and discontinuous; they avoid lowland forests and densely vegetated areas.

Voedsel

Wolverines are opportunistic carnivores, feeding primarily on carrion (winter kills), small to medium mammals, birds, and bird eggs; they also consume berries and vegetation seasonally.

Gedrag
