Kjennetegn

Stocky, powerfully built mustelid with dark brown to black fur and distinctive pale stripes or patches along the sides and back. Males are noticeably larger and more robust than females, with a characteristic robust head and short, rounded ears.

Størrelse og vekt

Males: 14–17 kg, females: 9–13 kg. Body length (head to rump): 65–105 cm, with males averaging larger across all measurements.

Leveområde

Wolverines inhabit remote boreal and subarctic forests, tundra, and alpine regions across northern latitudes. They prefer harsh terrain with low human disturbance, ranging from sea level to high mountains.

Utbredelse

Found across northern Scandinavia, Russia, Canada, and Alaska in boreal and arctic zones. In Fennoscandia, restricted to high-altitude mountain plateaus and remote northern forests.

Føde

Wolverines are opportunistic carnivores feeding on carrion, small mammals, birds, berries, and cached prey from other predators; diet varies seasonally with availability of winter kills and spring ground squirrels.

Atferd

Primarily nocturnal and crepuscular, solitary or in loose pairs with large individual territories (100+ km²). Highly mobile and active year-round, with irregular movement patterns and known tendency to revisit kills.

Jakttips

Look for tracks (five toes, faint claws) in snow and mud, and large, dark droppings often deposited on rocks or ridges. Approach from downwind across open or sparse terrain early morning or late evening; wolverines have excellent smell but rely less on vision. Patience at kills or cached sites increases encounter probability.
