Kjennetegn
A very small, elongated mustelid with a long body, short legs, and small rounded ears. The coat is typically brown above with white underparts; some northern populations show white winter pelage.
Størrelse og vekt
Adults weigh 1.3–2.5 kg, with males notably larger than females. Body length is 17–27 cm, plus a short 2–5 cm tail.
Leveområde
Least weasels inhabit open and semi-open terrain including grasslands, meadows, cultivated fields, and moorland. They thrive from lowland to subalpine zones where rodent populations are abundant.
Utbredelse
Widespread across northern Eurasia including Scandinavia and much of Norway, occurring in open country and field habitats at lower elevations and coastal plains.
Føde
Primarily small rodents—voles, mice, and shrews—with consumption varying seasonally based on rodent availability.
Atferd
Highly active both day and night with brief rest periods. Solitary and territorial; move rapidly through dense cover and underground burrow systems searching for prey.
Jakttips
Look for tracks in soft ground and snow—small paired prints in a line pattern—and tiny dark droppings near runways and burrow entrances. Hunt methodically through rough grassland and field margins during dawn and dusk when activity peaks. Move slowly and pause frequently to listen for rustling; use binoculars to glass dense vegetation for movement along ground-level routes.
